Longwood

Located in southwest Bronx, this two-square-mile neighborhood along with Hunts Point, make up Community District 2. It’s bordered by the Bronx River and Bruckner Expressway to the east, and Prospect Avenue to the west. The local subway lines are the 2, 5 and 6 trains, which get to Midtown in 25 minutes. The neighborhood’s main shopping corridor, Southern Boulevard, is lined with over 100 stores, businesses and eateries.

The neighborhood features a mix of modern apartment buildings, renovated pre-war buildings and attached row houses. Development has picked up since the 1990s in the form of new subsided rental housing and expansion of business in the area. The Fox Playground opened several years ago after a multi-million dollar renovation. Barretto Point Park Hunts Point’s industrial waterfront is another refurbished green space.

There are numerous public schools, including the South Bronx Classical Charter School (K to 4th grade) and PS 62. Area middle schools include the School of Performing Arts and Hunts Point School.

Bronx Studio School for Writers and Artists. Banana Kelly High School and the Bronx Regional High School are just a few of the high schools in the area. In addition to mentoring centers and sports fields, there are various unique resources and activities for children, like Rocking the Boat in Hunts Point Riverside Park, which offers boat-building classes.
