East Shore

This waterside region that runs along Staten Island’s east coast is typically defined as the land from the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge and the Staten Island Expressway on the North to the United Hebrew Cemetery on the south. The East Shore encompasses various small neighborhoods, including Arrochar, South Beach, Grasmere, Dongan Hills, Grant City, Midland Beach, New Dorp, Oakwood, Richmondtown, and Bay Terrace, along with part of Todt Hill. Many buildings require a walk to the Staten Island Railway, which terminates at the Ferry.

Fort Wadsworth, one of the oldest military sites in America and one of NYC’s most historic institutions sits at the Narrows of New York Harbor, next to the Verrazano Bridge. The FDR Boardwalk extends southeast from the majestic Fort Wadsworth to Miller Field. The 2.5 mile boardwalk is a popular path for runners and cyclers; the surrounding beaches feature playgrounds, baseball fields, basketball courts, skate parks, eateries, kayak launch sites, and more. History looms large throughout the neighborhood, which also features the Tibetan Museum on Lighthouse Hill, Moravian Cemetery (where members of the Vanderbilt family are buried) and a sizable portion of the Staten Island Greenbelt.

Hylan Boulevard is a retail destination for East Shore residents. The vibrant thoroughfare is lined with expansive plazas featuring familiar chain stores, like CVS and Stop & Shop, Kmart and TJ Max, independent businesses, from apparel shops to tattoo studios and hair salons, and some of the island’s most popular old-school Italian eateries. Many residents also shop at the Staten Island Mall, which is about a 30 minute drive. Its home to chain stores like Macy’s, H&M, Sears, Sephora and Gymboree, as well as high end retailers like Armani Exchange and Michael Kors.

North Shore Hospital, part of the North Shore LIJ Health Systems, is the area’s main healthcare facility with inpatient and outpatient services and diverse specialists. There are nearly 100 public, charter, private and parochial schools on the island. St. Joseph Hill Academy High School, Holy Rosary School (pre-K through 8th grade) and PS 46 Albert V. Maniscalco (pre-K through 5th grade) are among those that that serve the children of East Shore.
